Cheers!

Happy New Year, y'all!

I ate my weight in seafood, clinked champagne at midnight, and feel like I have been celebrating for a week.

As I am ironing out my resolutions I can't believe how fast the year went. So many big decisions and changes I sometimes can't even believe it all happened. Even this blog...8 months strong.

Even though my team lost their bowl game tonight and I didn't get a smooch from a sweet gent, I am QUITE the lucky lady. Nothing like a little brother handshake and "Auld Lang Syne" disguised as "The Good Ol' Song" to put ya in the mood.

Oh! And happy 75th birthday to my PawPaw!!!

Xoxo,

Christmas preview :)

We are en route to see my cousins for a few days. During this long car ride I have spent half of it sitting in the back seat (of my new car!) catching up on my favorite blogs from my trusty iPhone.

I was feeling inspired and I have a long post about the holidays in the works. For now, I wanted to share a little mini collage I just made with this cool new software!

***new app alert! download PolyMagic. It will change your world! best 99 cents I have spent in a while***

Thanks, Santa, for the iTunes money! It sure is spicing up the car ride with jams and games!!!

birfday

The birthday fairy came to visit and spread 27's all over the house....

the weather hit a serendipitous chilly 27 degrees....

and we had a cozy winter breakfast with warm cinnamon coffee, the coveted jalapeno sausage, and the FAMOUS buttery biscuit recipe my Paw-Paw taught my mom how to make years ago.

The Cuban-kid in me was thrilled to enjoy croquetas and Rummikub with my family,
and I even won the last round.
{birthday miracle}

After a cozy afternoon with popcorn and soda at the movie theatre, we did Italian.

Have I mentioned how much this girl loves her pasta?

We had escargot, stuffed mushrooms, calamari, cesar salad, and of course - I ordered the shrimp pasta.

We talked about how my 26th year went and what I hope to see in the 27th one.  I feel pretty proud of my self - new job, new city, new apartment, new car, and more.  This was also my first birthday in 10 years that I have been single and I didn't even miss having a leading man by my side.

It's crazy to have all of my new, merry, and happy at the same time.  Within less than 10 days I celebrate a birthday, Christmas and a new year every December.  While it can feel overwhelming, it's pretty special to make your resolutions all at once.  Each January I return to school (once grade school or college and now my job) with a vengeance.  My sister Kathleen asked me last night what I hope to do in 2012 and I already had a laundry list of things I can't wait to jump start on.

{Thanks Kiks for reminding me to make sure that they aren't all boring or normal}

The day was complete with a holiday red velvet cupcake, and a champagne toast.

I am so lucky to have a Christmas-Eve-Eve birthday.  I remember as a child complaining about feeling jipped when getting ONE gift for both occasions, not being able to have my party on the actual date of my birth, and having to share my special day with La Noche Buena.  But as I have grown older I have realized how I always benefit from being born this time of year.

While it's nice to have lights hanging everywhere and sometimes see snow on my big day, the best part of being born on 12.23 is seeing these three people.

I have never had a birthday alone, never suffered from the birthday blues and always celebrated with my family.  Not a year has gone by in my 27 where I have had to spend this day figuring out what to do with myself, having to go to work - I have spent every one with my mom and dad, most of them with my sisters and brother, and my abuela has not missed a single occasion.

Last night was a special rite of passage in that KidNation was able to hit the town together after dinner for more celebrating.  What a treat to see us all grow older and become our own selves.  I had a moment or two where I felt a little bit teary eyed - I remember those Christmas seasons where we were so little and left so much of the joy up to Saint Nick and what filled our stockings.  Now we create our own fun, we worry less and less each year about the gifts we unwrap and put more time and energy into spending multiple untouched days together (sometimes days where we do nothing but sit on the couch all tangled up talking).

The best gift I got yesterday was a drink with my sisters and bro, followed by a pajama/pallet session.  The sacred-sibling-sleep is something I still hope to see when we are married (the more on the pallet the merrier!) and can't wait to teach my own children.

And the best keeps getting better.  How can your life be that terrible when the two days after your birthday (when most people have to return to the real world) are Christmas Eve and Christmas?  I smell the makings of a gumbo and need to wrap a present for my buddy!

Merry Christmas, Y'all!

2XCITD

Just finished up an awesome semester, little sister comes in 48 hours, birthday party this weekend, Santa has brought me lots of my wishes already, dressing up as a reindeer on Saturday night's dance floor, and two weeks off staring me in the face.

Saw this license plate on the drive home and it pretty much sums it up.

O, Tannenbaum....

Found this Christmas Tree Blessing on a friend's blog tonight.   Had to share:

Holy Creator of Trees,
bless with your abundant grace
this our Christmas tree as a symbol of joy.
May its evergreen branches be a sign
of your never-fading promises.
May its colorful lights and ornaments call us
to decorate with love our home and our world.
May the gifts that surround this tree
be symbols of the gifts we have received
from the Tree of Christ’s Cross.
Holy Christmas tree within our home,
may Joy and Peace come and nest
in your branches and in our hearts. Amen.

wagons ho!

This has simply been an incredible week at work, I've certainly had a five star school-year so far, and I have so many things about my job that I am dying to blog about on a regular basis - but try to filter it usually (since it's pretty dorky!)  However, today was AMAZING.

The children in second grade that I teach reading and social studies to each week have spent the last 6 weeks studying pioneers.  We went to visit a village of log cabins on a bus a few weeks ago, have taught them the words to old classic songs like "Oh my daaaaarlin' Clementine," dipped candles and knitted with them at school, have read novels, done research, written in diaries and studied the entire Oregon Trail.

Today was an incredible culmination of the unit - our very own journey.

(Those of you who used to actually play "Oregon Trail" on the 90's desktop computer at school will fully appreciate this.)

Today at school we took 49 second graders (dressed up as pioneers, pulling red wagons) on an adventure through our playground/campus that was disguised as an obstacle course much like the Oregon Trail itself.  The children were assigned jobs, family members, livestock weeks ago and had to choose which necessities (imaginary) to pack this month, and weighed their wagons before we left.  They took family portraits (not smiling, of course), brought props like knapsacks and lunch pails, and we hit the road.  We paraded through the school and encountered hardships - both real and imaginary - an attack from Native Americans, wind storms, quick sand, trading posts where they had to make team decisions, we rolled up and down the "Rocky Mountains", signed our names on Independence Rock, suffered the loss of oxen, hid under trees from actually rainy weather, witnessed Cholera and crossed several large puddles that we dubbed "huuuuge rivers."

{our inspiration}

This is a second grade tradition at our school and something we had been planning for weeks.  However, a REAL HARDSHIP hit this morning when the teacher's realized that a 40 degree downpour was going to put a cramp in our plans.

However, I was SO incredibly amazed at the teamwork and flexibility I saw today in the children AND adults who were a part of this experience.  The children were flexible - we spent only a short time outside and imagined the rest indoors, we visited classrooms inside of the school instead (teachers who welcomed us into their busy rooms during the last week before winter break - how fabulous!), got a surprise visit from two of the administrators who read us stories and helped us make "Little House in the Big Woods" maple syrup candy on short notice, picnic-ed by the fireplace instead of under the sky, and (as teachers) ran around with our heads cut off to ensure that this "class of 2014" didn't get the short end of the stick.

baskets and pails instead of lunch boxes.
home-made butter and cornbread! YUM!
walking through the hallways singing campfire songs at the top of our lungs!

trekking through Cumberland Gap
fireside time with a special visitor!

I cannot tell you how big my smile is today.  The children were so well-behaved.  They were so helpful, so patient, so understanding.  They made the best of what we gave them and they decided to have fun no matter what.

And what a team I have! I am such a lucky gal to work with such amazing women who are willing to show me traditions, allow me to change other ones with new ideas I have, and who are so fun to be around - even on what can sometimes start off as "the worst day ever."  Today was one I will NEVER forget and I have so much love in my heart.  I am so darn proud of my students I can hardly stand it!

merry and bright

red hot christmas followed by karaoke, mad men bash, shopping for my secret snowman, lunch date with jessa, amazing church concert, wrapped all of my presents, mi cocina with highland park lights on display, and one week until kiki gets here. :) december, i heart u.

Do I need to write much more than that?

promise fills the sky with light,
stars and angels dance in flight;
joy of heaven shall now unbind
chains of evil from mankind,
love and joy their power shall break,
and for a newborn Prince's sake,
never since the world began
such a light such dark did span.
-Ursula Vaughan Williams
(the words above were one of my favorite parts they sang tonight at the performance.  And see below for an advent lullaby I discovered.  Hauntingly beautiful!)

1960s Christmas

Last night my boys and I hosted a Mad Men Christmas party. And was it a hit!

There's something special about costumes, decorations, a good theme and music to boot. We decorated, researched cocktails and hairstyles, bought stock in hairspray and eyeliner, and had quite the hip holiday gathering.

This was my first time to host a party without a potluck feel to it and I hope I did my parents proud. I was channeling their old Mardi Gras parties and Casanova Christmas Eves from years past.

I am hoping that this maybe becomes a tradition, as there is so much fun stuff to do with the 1960s. We carried candy cigarettes, sipped from martini glasses, played a fake fireplace movie on the tv, and both gals and guys alike rocked skinny ties, bouffant updos, cocktail attire and played the part 110%. It was so classy.

I think Betty Draper would have been proud of not only my menu and playlist, but the apron and lipstick I had on last night.

My only regret is not taking as many pictures of outfits and details as I would have liked, but I will never forget how fun it was.
